How to Calculate and Draw Venn Diagrams?

Visualizing information makes it easier for many people to understand it. For this reason, it makes sense to convey concepts in a graphical format when possible.

What is a Venn diagram?

A Venn diagram is a great tool for showing how different types of data can overlap.

For example, if you would like to compare birds to people, you would make a list of traits for each group. Under birds you might have:

  • Walks on two feet
  • Can fly on its own wings
  • Can sing

For people, you might have:

  • Walks on two feet
  • Can fly in airplanes
  • Can sing

To show how people and birds are alike in some ways and different in others, you could draw two overlapping circles. While any shape can be used, circles are often the easiest to visualize.

One circle represents birds, the other people.

The overlapping part would include the traits of walking on two feet and singing. The discrete parts would include flying with their own wings for birds and flying on planes for people.

Using Venn diagrams for solving complex problems

Let’s say you are trying to calculate probabilities for a class of 100 students. Of those 100 students, 70 like English and 60 like math. 40 like both. How would you figure out the probability of a random student liking math but not English using a Venn diagram?

You would first draw two circles that overlap. This is how you would begin to draw a Venn diagram that will help you find a solution to your question.

The overlapping area includes the students who like both math and English, so it would have 40 students. This overlapping area includes the students who like math who also like English, so the non-overlapping areas represent students who only like one subject.

To calculate the students who only like math, subtract 40 from 60 to get 20. The students who only like English are 70 minus 40, which is 30 students.

Note that since there are 100 students total, there will be 10 who like neither subject.

To calculate the probability that a random student only likes math, we divide the number of students who only like math by the total number of students. That gives us the answer – 20%.
